What is it? (in a nutshell)


Here's my definition

Maintaining status and control of the configuration of a software system and the changes made to it.


Maintain status: Record and track -- not a snapshot but an ongoing process.

Control: Not just watching as changes go by but controlling if and when they occur.

Configuration: The aggregate of the current versions of all of the pieces of the software & documentation

Software System: A computer application including all pertinent documentation and manuals
